Nominees for the 90th Academy Awards were announced today and while there will be the usual debate over snubs and overhyped titles to show up all season long, we’re just glad that the news today was dominated by celebrating some great work on some great films.
First, congratulations are in order to Meryl Streep and John Williams, who have each broken their own record for nominations. Streep has 18 nominations (with 3 wins) and John Williams earns his 51st nomination (5 wins) and continued title of most nominated living person. (Walt Disney holds the all-time record with 22 wins from 59 nominations.)
Once again, the Best Picture category has been expanded and includes nine films. Whether you think the Oscars are a self-congratulatory love fest, or a 4 hour long commercial for distributors to raise awareness, you’re right – and having 9 films featured allows for some great films to receive their much-deserved spotlight.
Fox Searchlight leads the pack with 20 nominations for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “The Shape of Water,” which stood alone with 13 total. Amazon Studios made history last year as the first streaming service to earn a Best Picture nomination with “Manchester by the Sea,” but this year they were given only a single nod for “The Big Sick” for Best Original Screenplay while competitor Netflix earned 8 nominations, a company best, with 4 for “Mudbound”, 2 documentary entires (“Icarus” and “Strong Island”), the short “Heroin(e)” and the foreign language entry from Hungary, “Of Body and Soul.”
Last year, indie distributor A24 made history with “Moonlight” winning Best Picture and earns 7 nominations this year, thanks to “Lady Bird”, while freshman NEON earned 3 nominations for “I, TONYA.”
